Not much is known about him. His parents died at the hands of, who Emil believes to be, Lloyd Irving in Palmacosta after the Blood Purge. As a result, he is sent to his aunt and uncle in Luin who dislike him and talk harshly to him. He gets bullied for not looking up to the hero Lloyd Irving because he refused to worship a murderer. Emil is very shy, nervous and apologizes a lot. His shyness prevents him from making any friends while in Luin and he feels like he is lonely and that everyone in the town hates him for not looking up to Lloyd. His personality changes a lot when he meets Richter as Ricther helps Emil to stand up for himself and not cower in fear in the face of opposition.

After Tenebrae gives Emil the power of a knight of Ratatosk, Emil's eye color changes to red and his personality changes completely. This personality shows no fear and is stronger than Emil both emotionally and physically at the time. Emil fight using This other personality tends to treat others in the party harshly and as a result some of them grow to dislike this alter ego. Other changes brought on by becoming a knight of Ratatosk include a change in outfit, being given the Sorcerer's Ring, and being able to form pacts with monsters. Additionally, with each centurions core Emil obtains, he gets a skill named after that Centurions core that changes one of his base Artes to the element of the Centurion core he captured.
