Despite Regal Bryant's somewhat scary appearance, he is actually a kind and polite man and the last person to join the party. Because of a crime he committed in the past, Regal constantly wears handcuff as a symbol of his guilt so he is forced to fight with his feet (though he is a much stronger fight with his hands). Regal is very hard on him self and constantly persecutes himself for his justifiable crime. When the party meets up with Regal, he is briefly stunned when he see Presea Combatir. Regal eventually decides to join the party so he can speak with Presea. During their travels, Regal reveals that he is actually the president of the Lazerano Company, a successful and prestigious company that produces a variety of goods. Regal also reveals that he and Presea's sister Alicia were once in love, but she had an expshere attached directly to her skin which eventually caused her to turn into a monster. To prevent her from living the life of a monster, Regal kills her then immediatly turns himself in. In a later scene at Alicia's grave, her spirit appears and tells Regal how happy she is to see him though Regal expected her to hate him. Regal is relieved and slowly begins to forgive himself for the crime
Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World
Just as you did in the first game, you first meet Regal as a prisoner. This time he is incarcerated for starting fires in Izoold. Regal was found innocent later when it was discovered that a monster caused the fires. After he is released from jail, Regal joins the party in order to help search for Lloyd. Regal has now removed his handcuffs as a last request from Alicia though he still continues to fight with his feet. During the Vanguards attack on Altamira, Regal stays behind with Sheena Fujibyashi to fight off the Vanguard while Emil and Marta escape.
